Russians come to Varbola fort

to map

February 1212

Prince of Novgorod, Mstislav Mstislavich, decided to interfere again in the conquest of Estonia, and organized a raid, together with the new prince of Pihkva. They passed through Vaiga and Järvamaa counties, and came to Harjumaa (Revalia), where they started to siege Varbola fort (see image). After few days, the defenders agreed to pay a tribute to the attackers, which left after that.

When they got back to Pihkva, however, a unpleasant surprise was waiting for them. Apparently, the elder of Leole fort, Lembitu, had gathered a big army from all the parishes of Saccalia and Ugaunia, and taken it to the town of Pihkva, looting and killing its citizens. They had left before Mstislav Mstislavich returned, thus latter came to a razed and pillaged town.
