Conclusive suppression of the uprising in Saaremaa

to map

February 1345

In the beginning of 1345, Order gathered a huge army, rallying people all over Estonia and Livonia, and invaded Saaremaa again, crossing the frozen sea for the second time. This time, the battle took place near Maasilinn (then known as Maansaar), the Oeselians lost and had to build the fort of Maasilinn as a punishment (in German, the name of the fort, Soneburg, carries the meaning of punishment). Perhaps they were also forced to build bishop's fort in Kuressaare.
