14. February 1944

On February 14, 1944, Red Army conquered Piirisaare Island (in Lake Peipsi), crossed Lämmijärv Lake and came to Mehikoorma on the shore of Lake Peipsi. There, a bridgehead was built.

This position was a serious threat on Tartu, thus the battalion of the Estonian Division, lead by Harald Riipalu and on its way from Tartu to Narva, was sent to dispose of it. In the Battle of Meerapalu-Jõepera, held on February 14-16, Riipalu's battalion, together with German and Home Guard units, destroyed the units of the Russians that had advanced to Estonia and pushed them back. Red Army posed no threat on Southern-Estonia until the summer of 1944.
