Riga falls to Gustav II Adolf

to map

15. September 1621

In 1611 - 1617, a truce held between Sweden and Poland, but soon a war broke out again.

Already in the summer of 1517, the Swedish took Pärnu in a unexpected attack, after that another two year truce was formed (1618-1620).

Following this, Swedish kin Gustav II Adolf took advantage of Poland being at war with Turkey and in September 1621, seized Riga.

Loosing Riga was a heavy blow, but it did not end Poland's power in Livonia: South-Eastern Estonia along with Tartu was still under the Polish rule.
