Jõgeva has earned its name as the capital of cold, as Estonia's cold records and some other extremely low temperatures have been recorded here.

This includes the cold record of the XXI century, -36,7 degrees C, recorded on January 11, 2003.
Since 1922, this weather station has recorded cold below -30 C on 39 winters, accounting for 45% of all the winters. During a very cold winter of 1939/40, this kind of frost occurred on 16 nights, in 1941/42 on 14, in 1962/63 on 11, in 1955/56 on 10 , in 1978/79 on 8, in 1986/87 on 8 and in 1984/85 on 7 nights.
